Thursday, October 1, 2009 was an AWESOME day at Southside Middle School. Many of our students and family members visited the school building between 4:30 and 6:00 for the first annual M&M Math Night at SMS. Students and their families visited the mathematics classes within the school to experience some of the daily activities that take place in the mathematics curriculum. New advancements in technology were explored as families were able to see their children utilizing the school’s new Promethean Smart Boards, Quizdom Interactive Units, and laptop units from SMS’s mobile laptop stations. Students and family members participated in hands-on activities using math manipulatives, calculators, graphing calculators, and paper/pencil activities. They were able to see real-world connections that the school’s Math teachers are working to instill and there was even a station in which they could see cross curriculum connections as 8^th grade science teacher, Terina Gantt, provided hands-on activities to demonstrate such. The night was capped off as each participant was rewarded with munchies on their way out. (Soda, chips and M&M’s) Students were excited to receive an additional reward of 2 SMS Bucks. Southside Middle School administrators, faculty & staff would like to thank all those who participated- Students and Family members! The night was a HUGE SUCCESS!!!!!!!!
